I've always just put in the cd... until a few months ago. The problem is, I sometimes put a game away for a while and just can't find it again when I want to play it. With a No-CD patch, I can fire it ...
Just a stab in the dark, but did you try inserting disc 1? IIRC, the BG2 install takes the 1st disc again after going through all of the discs once. Maybe it just said the wrong thing.
